In a typical 1st Year Band rehearsal, students experience the following routine:
  1. First 6 Notes Warm Up- in whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes
  2. Rhythm Reading- Teacher or students create and read a rhythm that may use whole, dotted half, half, and quarter notes and rests.  You can find sample rhythms on pages 44 and 45 in the red method book
  3. Dissection of Sections of Repertoire- For this activity at home, students would work on the "trouble spots" in their music
  4. Run Through of Full Pieces- Play learned repertoire from beginning to end.

In a typical 2nd Year Band rehearsal, students experience the following routine:
  1. Scales (Concert Bb, F, and Eb)- in whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes.
  2. Rhythm Reading- Teacher or students create and read a rhythm that may use whole, dotted half, half, dotted quarter, quarter, eighth notes and rests.  Students can also alter the time signature to be 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 6/8, etc.  You can find sample rhythms on pages 44-46 in the red method book
  3. Dissection of Sections of Repertoire- For this activity at home, students would work on the "trouble spots" in their music
  4. Run Through of Full Pieces- Play learned repertoire from beginning to end.

Additional Ideas:
  1. Compose a playable 4 or 8 measure long piece that uses your first 8 notes.
  2. Have a family improvisation battle.  To begin with, pick 2 or 3 pitches so it isn't overwhelming. You can use a fun backing track on youtube as accompaniment-  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBfS9jFRJzA
  3. Find new music- https://www.musicnotes.com/ has free amateur compositions/arrangements of pop songs.  This could be fun to learn a piece.
