Homework for this week-

2nd Year Band
1. Bb Scale in half notes (2 beats per note)
2. Eb Scale in dotted half notes (3 beats per note)
3. pg 9 #25 in Red Book- "A La Rueda"- circle breath marks please!
****Percussion- please slowly practice single paradiddles (pg 47 #16) in front of a mirror.  Watch out for stick height (8 inches), 90 degrees sticks, and tops of your hands are flat :)

1st Year Band
The purpose of homework this week is to get students making sounds on their instrument and assembling/holding them properly.  Because each instrument is held slightly differently, check under instrument name for homework.

Flute-
1.  Practice making HIGH AND LOW sounds on head joint in the mirror.  Hold the head joint with your left hand and cover the open end with your right palm.  To make a higher sound, make the hole of your mouth  smaller (smaller than a grain of rice!) and blow faster air.
2.  Figure out where to put your fingers on your instrument for the first 5 notes on the "First 8 Notes" handout using the diagrams under the notes.  You don't need to play them, just practice reading a fingering chart (the diagram).  These notes would be Bb, C, D, Eb, and F.
3.  Practice page 6 #1, 2, and 4.  I will be looking for correct notes and that you play and rest for the right amount of beats.
**If you can't remember where to put your fingers, remember- skip one, use one, skip one, use two.

Clarinet-
1.  Practice making sounds on mouthpiece in the mirror.
Use the "Embouchure" handout to help you shape your mouth the right way. NO PUFFY CHEEKS!
2.  Figure out where to put your fingers on your instrument for the first 5 notes on the "First 8 Notes" handout using the diagrams under the notes.  You don't need to play them, just practice reading a fingering chart (the diagram).  These notes would be C, D, E, F, and G.
3.  Practice #1, 2, and 4 on page 6.  I will be looking for correct notes and that you play and rest for the right amount of beats.

Saxophone-
1. Practice setting up your instrument so it fits your body.  This means, tighten the neck strap, hang over your right leg, and turn the mouthpiece so it goes straight into your mouth.
2.  Figure out where to put your fingers on your instrument for the first 5 notes on the "First 8 Notes" handout using the diagrams under the notes.  You don't need to play them, just practice reading a fingering chart (the diagram).  These notes would be G, A, B, C, and D.
3.  Practice #1, 2, and 4 on page 6.  I will be looking for correct notes and that you play and rest for the right amount of beats.
**If you can't remember where to put your fingers on the pearls, remember- skip one, use one, skip one, use two.

Trumpet-
1.  Practice making HIGH AND LOW sounds on mouthpiece in the mirror.
No puffy cheeks like Dizzy Gillespie- keep the corners of your mouth in
Practice making low sounds (loose lips) and high sounds (tighter lips)
2.  Figure out where to put your fingers on your instrument for the first 5 notes on the "First 8 Notes" handout using the numbers under the notes.  You don't need to play them, just practice reading a fingering chart (the numbers).  These notes would be C, D, E, F, and G.
3.  Practice #1, 2, and 4 on page 6.  I will be looking for correct notes and that you play and rest for the right amount of beats.

Trombone-
1.  Practice making HIGH AND LOW sounds on mouthpiece in the mirror.
No puffy cheeks like Dizzy Gillespie- keep the corners of your mouth in
Practice making low sounds (loose lips) and high sounds (tighter lips)
2.  Figure out slide positions for the first 5 notes on the "First 8 Notes" handout using the numbers under the notes.  You don't need to play them, just practice reading the position chart (the numbers) and figuring out where some positions are on your trombone.  You can find more information on slide positions on the inside cover of your book.  These notes would be Bb, C, D, Eb, and F.
3.  Practice #1, 2, and 4 on page 6.  I will be looking for correct notes and that you play and rest for the right amount of beats.

Percussion
1.  Practice matched grip in the mirror
Thumb and first knuckle of pointer finger grip
Other fingers stay relaxed and curl around stick
        Arms parallel to the floor
        JUST THOSE WRISTS!
2.  Practice #1, 2, and 4 on page 6.  There are two lines per song.  Please practice the BOTTOM LINE that says "SD".  I will be looking to see if you can count it correctly and correct sticking (use your right hand when you see "R", left hand when you see "L").
