The first week of lessons and rehearsals have finally arrived! Please be sure to go over lesson times and days with your child. Students are expected to be set up and ready to go by the time band rehearsal begins.

Homework for this week-
2nd Year Band
1. Bb Scale in half notes (2 beats per note)
2. Eb Scale in whole notes (4 beats per note)
3. pg 10 #29 in Red Book- "Serenity"
****Percussion- please slowly practice single paradiddles (pg 47 #16) n front of a mirror. Watch out for stick height (8 inches), 90 degrees sticks, and tops of your hands are flat :)

The purpose of homework this week is to get students making sounds on their instrument and assembling/holding them properly. Because each instrument is held slightly differently, check under instrument name for homework.
Flute-
1. Practice making sounds on head joint in the mirror.
Make very small "oooo" shape with lips... blow across (not down or in) the tone hole
Lip plate should sit slightly under the bottom lip
2. Practice how to hold in front of mirror- pick it up, check hands, try to make a sound, put it back down
For finger placement- "skip one, use one, skip one, use two"
Clarinet-
1. Practice making sounds on mouthpiece in the mirror.
Use the "Embouchure" handout to help you shape your mouth the right way

Finger placement is very similar to recorder- left hand on top, right thumb under thumb rest, pads of fingers

Practice making low sounds (loose lips) and high sounds (tighter lips)

Left Hand- holds the trumpet up
Right hand- thumb in between valve 1 and 2, three fingers on valves, pinky is perched on the hook too keep a
relaxed and straight wrist
Trombone-
1. Practice making sounds on mouthpiece in the mirror.
No puffy cheeks like Dizzy Gillespie- keep the corners of your mouth in
Practice making low sounds (loose lips) and high sounds (tighter lips)
2. Practice how to hold in front of mirror- pick it up, check hands, try to make a sound, put it back down
Left hand- thumb under brace, 2 fingers on mouthpiece, other fingers in the square
Right hand- thumb and two fingers pinch the slide brace
Percussion
1. Practice matched grip in the mirror
Thumb and first knuckle of pointer finger grip
Other fingers stay relaxed and curl around stick
Arms parallel to the floor
JUST THOSE WRISTS!
2. Practice quickly setting up kit (you can even time yourself!)
Adjust to be belt height
